go beyond art is a programme of events and activities including students, emerging practitioners, and practising artists that supports Belfast’s existing and future practitioners in the delivery of high-quality creative practices in Sailortown and across the city, and asks pertinent questions about how public art and the built environment can connect with neighbourhoods and citizens.
The programme takes its title from the first directive of the Situationists International – written by poet, artist, revolutionary thinker, editor, and filmmaker Guy Debord in 1963 – that called for artists to ‘go beyond art’, give up art-making with a capital ‘A’ and continue their struggle in non-art fields and everyday life.
Our first go beyond art module was delivered in 2018 with Ulster University Fine Art students. In 2019 and 2020, we worked with Architecture students from Ulster University and Queen’s University. go beyond art will continue in 2020/21.
